If you have never made homemade pizza dough before don’t feel intimidated, it’s very easy and this is a no-knead recipe which makes it even easier. You can find a step-by-step guide here which includes a casual video on the making of it all. Note: Michael and Renee followed Jim Lahey’s lead on the pizza dough preparation. Both recipes highlight the unique flavor of the olive oil and oregano from Sparta, Greece which you can find at All other ingredients can be locally sourced from your grocery or market. Or if you find yourself ready to put the heavy plates of the holiday season behind you then the Greek Baked Cod would be just the ticket for a light and refreshing meal. If you are still entertaining holiday house guests the Greek Pizza makes for a fun party pleaser and can be doubled or tripled in size to fit all appetites. Michael and Renee’s recipes couldn’t have come at a better time in our calendar year. Next, (just in time for Fish Friday) they made a simple Greek-style baked cod using local fish and an array of herbs. Long-time connoisseurs of make-it-yourself pizza they first prepared a Mediterranean style Greek pizza with homemade dough and an inventive brussels sprout topping. Fantastic! Here is what they made… “The olive oil has such a nice fruitiness and the oregano is slightly floral and delicate,” shared Renee. In a lovely spirit of community, these two home chefs not only sent back a follow-up note on their gift receipt but also included recipes and photos of everything they made with their Sparta samplings. Possibilities abounded of course, but it didn’t take very long before they settled on two Mediterranean-style dishes that highlighted their new winnings and captured the simple fresh flavors of their farmer’s market palates. Meet blog reader Michael, one of the winners in last month’s Spartan Souvenir giveaway and his lovely wife Renee.Īs soon as their prize of Greek olive oil and wild mountain oregano hit their mailbox they started daydreaming about what they could make. Would jellied cheese be better than it sounds? Would I find the next “wow” dish to bring or serve at my next dinner party?”īy day they are executives in New York City but by night (and most weekends too) they are culinary wizards adventuring their way around the inventive kitchen. Initially, by participating in this challenge, I was interested to see what kinds of textures would be achieved. But it has so many uses beyond fruit gelatin desserts. The expectation is that it will create something solid and jiggly. “I think many people are afraid of gelatin or they don’t realize that it can be used to create something of a creamy texture. Marianne addressed the preconceptions about the congealed consistency factor. Unlike what we expected – suspended savories in a flavorless blob – we got a light and tasteful alternative to boring green salads.” Once we tried the cucumber mousse (which was the first recipe we made), our feelings immediately changed. Anything that wasn’t fitting of that description was considered unpalatable. “Could savory jello recipes be tasty? Or are we too ingrained in that jello is supposed to be sweet and fruity? Coming from the 1990’s baby background that the Retro Revival staff was born in, jello desserts were only fruit flavored. Harpie and Manny weren’t sure that a gelatin dish could taste good if it was anything other than sweet. So enjoying two out of three of these vintage recipes wasn’t so bad! Each of us embarked on this challenge with our own pre-conceived notions about jellied foods. It was a heady decade full of potential and possibilities for both gelatin companies and creative home cooks! Companies like Kraft Food (makers of Jell-O) responded to the demands of mid-century women by continuously creating and rolling out a plethora of newly invented flavored gelatins during the 1950’s that, in-turn, spawned thousands of unique recipes ranging from sweet to savory. This was the perfect meal-planning solution for busy women acting as wife, mother, career professional and caretaker all in one. Gelatin-based salads, desserts, and main entrees were quick to prepare, could be made well in advance of the dinner hour and retained their shape and consistency for days in the refrigerator. In that decade, more women worked outside the home than ever before making time a newly juggled commodity. Gelatin may have seen its rise to fame in the 1930’s, but its absolute height of popularity came in the 1950’s where two of our recipes originate. In this post, we are diving head first into three vintage gelatin recipes steeped in the culture of mid-century America.

Brands of triple sec include Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or Triple Sec (yes, it’s a name of the brand and a type of liqueur). Triple sec is an orange-flavored liqueur that originated in France. It has a great balance of bitter and sweet flavors. Orange Liquor – My favorite orange liqueur is Cointreau and this is what I recommend for this recipe. Check out all my cocktail recipes with cranberry juice to see how you can use up the leftovers. What to do with leftover cranberry juice? You can make Malibu bay breeze or Sea breeze cocktail. Unsweetened 100% cranberry juice would be too tart for this recipe. Cranberry juice sweetened with other fruit juices can also be used. You don’t have to use expensive vodka for this recipe – its flavor is a little bit muted by cranberry juice.Ĭranberry juice – you need to use sweetened cranberry juice also called cranberry juice cocktail. Which vodka is best for cocktails? Can I be patriotic and say – use Polish vodka? Wyborowa, Chopin vodka, Żubrówka, and Belvedere vodka are great choices! If there is no Polish vodka available at your grocery store – other great choices are Smirnoff, Absolut vodka, or Grey Goose. So if you can’t find it, don’t worry – regular vodka and just a couple of drops of lemon juice will work just fine. I must admit, it was not easy for me to find a lemon vodka – I have found it in the fourth grocery store that I visited. I actually made two cocktails, one with regular vodka and one with lemon vodka, and tasted them side by side and I can tell you – the difference in flavor is not very noticeable! Sure, the lemon vodka has a subtle citrus flavor to it but it’s just not that noticeable. You can also use regular vodka, add a couple of drops of lemon juice and your cocktail will taste the same. If you can’t easily find this kind of vodka – don’t worry. Here’s what you need to make a Cosmopolitan cocktail:Ĭitron vodka: (lemon zest-infused vodka) This vodka is not sweet, it just has a slight lemon flavor. The Cosmopolitan cocktail is now considered an official IBA (International Bartenders Association) cocktail. The pink-hued cocktail was a favorite of the characters on the show. No matter the origins, the drink became famous in the 1990s thanks to the tv show “Sex and the City”. From there the drink spread to the rest of lower Manhattan. The internationally recognized version is said to have been created at The Odeon restaurant in Manhattan by Toby Cecchini in 1988. John Caine gets credit for bringing the drink west and popularizing it in San Francisco. Starting with a recipe for the Harpoon cocktail (vodka, cranberry juice, and lime juice), from a 1960s Ocean Spray ad, Cook added orange liqueur and citrus vodka. She was trying to develop a cocktail using the newly-released Absolut Citron vodka. It is said that it could be first mixed by Cheryl Cook in Miami, Florida. The classic Cosmopolitan cocktail (aka “Cosmo”) is a simple and delicious drink that quickly became one of the most popular cocktails of all time. Nupedia and Wikipedia coexisted until the former's servers were taken down permanently in 2003, and its text was incorporated into Wikipedia. Language editions were created beginning in March 2001, with a total of 161 in use by the end of 2004. Wikipedia gained early contributors from Nupedia, Slashdot postings, and web search engine indexing. Bomis originally intended it as a business for profit. Otherwise, there were initially relatively few rules, and it operated independently of Nupedia. Its integral policy of "neutral point-of-view" was codified in its first few months. The name originated from a blend of the words wiki and encyclopedia. Wikipedia was launched on Janu as a single English-language edition at and announced by Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list. The domains (later redirecting to ) and were registered on January 12, 2001, and January 13, 2001, respectively. On January 10, 2001, Sanger proposed on the Nupedia mailing list to create a wiki as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Wales is credited with defining the goal of making a publicly editable encyclopedia, while Sanger is credited with the strategy of using a wiki to reach that goal. Nupedia was initially licensed under its own Nupedia Open Content License, but before Wikipedia was founded, Nupedia switched to the GNU Free Documentation License at the urging of Richard Stallman. Its main figures were Bomis CEO Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, editor-in-chief for Nupedia and later Wikipedia. It was founded on March 9, 2000, under the ownership of Bomis, a web portal company. Wikipedia began as a complementary project for Nupedia, a free online English-language encyclopedia project whose articles were written by experts and reviewed under a formal process. Various collaborative online encyclopedias were attempted before the start of Wikipedia, but with limited success. Wikipedia founders Jimmy Wales (left) and Larry Sanger (right) Articles on breaking news are often accessed as sources of frequently updated information about those events. It has been censored by some national governments, ranging from specific pages to the entire site. While the reliability of Wikipedia was frequently criticized in the 2000s, it has improved over time, receiving greater praise in the late 2010s and early 2020s, having become an important fact-checking site. It has been criticized for exhibiting systemic bias, particularly gender bias against women and geographical bias against the Global South. Wikipedia has been praised for its enablement of the democratization of knowledge, extent of coverage, unique structure, and culture. Wikipedia's editions when combined, comprise more than 61 million articles, attracting around 2 billion unique device visits per month and more than 15 million edits per month (about 5.8 edits per second on average) as of July 2023. Initially only available in English, editions in other languages were quickly developed. Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger on January 15, 2001, it is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, an American nonprofit organization. Wikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history, and has consistently been one of the 10 most popular websites. "My main criteria in what I recommend are: what skill set does my patient have, how many people are they cooking for, how adventurous of an eater are they, what is their socioeconomic status and do they cook for pleasure?" says Schiferl. When it comes to buying and recommending cookbooks for people with diabetes, Joanna Schiferl, RDN, who specializes in diabetes, says she has a few criteria for how she recommends books to patients. The types of carbs you eat are also important, since high-glycemic carbs like refined sugar or processed foods can spike your sugars more than minimally processed carbs (like whole grains) and foods with natural sugars that also have fiber (like fresh fruit).Ĭan You Eat Carbs When You Have Diabetes? While there's no one-size-fits-all plan, most people with diabetes generally want to limit their carbs at each meal (you can find out more about how many carbs you should be eating at each meal here).Īdditionally, your blood sugar is less likely to spike if you eat small meals more frequently, as opposed to larger meals with big time gaps between them. As a passionate home cook, I often relied on easy carbs like pasta and rice to be the basis for meals, so I knew I was going to have to turn my daily cooking practice on its head, but I also knew that I was going to need to expand my cookbook shelves to accommodate some specialty titles.Ĭooking as someone with diabetes, or for someone with diabetes, means paying attention to both the types of carbs and the volume. When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 10 years ago, one of my biggest concerns was how to adjust my cooking practices to fit my new medically required lower-carb lifestyle.
So I cut it down with the mini grinder and, Hey Presto! ,slipped it in there and wound the bolt out. A regular wrench or socket would definitely not get in there, but I did have a handy little 8mm semi socket spanner that I could almost get in. So I looked further and found I could get my fingers on it - and if I could do that, I could perhaps get a tool on it. That's it, all that faffing just because of that bolt. That airbox has no room for maneuvering at all! Anyhoo, I looked the whole job over and realized that the issue all came down to the cooling pipe, just below the carbs, rear mounting bolt. Now anyone who has tried that before would agree with me when I say I would rather have a root canal. I'd already scanned the Haynes manual and, the reason for my depression, was that to get to the little bugger, the carbs and airbox had to come off. Well I got the dreaded click on my '96 900 T-Bird and, after reading this thread, prayed that it was going be something along the lines of an electrical gremlin in the starting circuit or relay (which, incidentally I had just changed - so it was a prime suspect) but, depressingly, all proved to be good and I was resigned to pulling the starter. My bike is an un-heated garage and there is no electric to plug in a battery tender.Īy. After installing toggle switch, no more clicks and my bike even starts in freezing cold weather. I had the click problem REAL BAD with my 2009 America. If bike doesn't start, then look elsewhere, relay, solenoid, starter, etc. If you want to be sure that this is your problem, before you install toggle switch, open up headlight assembly and just unplug the plug going into headlight. Drill hole in headlight assembly, splice toggle switch wire into hot wire for low beam of headlight, push toggle switch up though hole and secure with nut. Very do-able for do it yourself or have mechanic do it. The fix is to install a toggle switch on the headlight assembly so you can shut off headlight when starting. If you have a Triumph that keeps the headlight on throughout the starting process it draws too much juice and because of the voltage cut-off settings in the CPU it shuts down the starting process and all you get is "click." The settings cannot be changed or re-mapped. Some of the Triumph models have an electrical design problem. Assuming you have a good battery, good connections, etc. If you are having a problem with your Triumph just going "click" when you try to start, I have figured out the problem AND how to easily fix it. |
